Emerging Stories#1: Journalism in times of isolation - How to inform during the crisis?

The world is in an extraordinary state at the moment.

The measures against COVID-19 not only affects our day-to-day interaction, but also has consequences for the way we can consume international stories, news and images. Photographers, journalists, writers and filmmakers around the world are being restricted. What does this mean for their work? And how can they, and we, keep being informed and having a broad perspective? Each week Dutch photojournalist and filmmaker Kadir van Lohuizen will talk about this with makers from different parts of the world.

After Us The Deluge by Kadir van Lohuizen

"After Us The Deluge" looks at the human consequences of the rising sea level. Due to the climate crisis, the glaciers all over the world are retreating and the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are melting at an alarming pace. The future human cost of rising sea levels are dramatic. The entire country of Kiribati, for example, will have to relocate, while it is estimated that in Bangladesh about 50 million people will need to move from the delta region by 2050. Nobody knows where they will go. The east coast of the USA is experiencing sea level rise which is three-times higher than the global average. It is predicted that major centres such as the Miami beach area will need to be evacuated by 2060.

"After Us The Deluge" provides vivid visual coverage of how the climate crisis is already affecting places where people live, Greenland with its melting glaciers, Kiribati, Fiji, the Carteret islands in Papua New Guinea, Bangladesh, the Guna Yala archipelago in Panama, the United Kingdom, Jakarta, the Marshall islands, the Netherlands and the United States.

Kadir van Lohuizen will be giving a keynote lecture at Princeton University's Humanities Council, on February 19th.

Kadir van Lohuizen tests Nikon's first stereoscopic imaging prototype

_DSC0008.jpg

Today was a very inspiring day at the NOOR office in Amsterdam. Thanks to Nikon Europe and Frank Zuidweg from Nikon Professional Services and NOOR Technical Partners on FotoInMotion Project, QdepQ, Nikon Ambassador Kadir van Lohuizen was able to explore the first prototype ever done for stereo imaging.

FotoInMotion is a project born from an innovative format that transforms a single photograph into a dynamic, high quality video for storytelling and branding. The FotoInMotion tool will allow both professional content producers and creative citizens to rapidly produce videos with automated editing functions and dynamic effects driven by AI-powered object identification and advanced 3D technology.

Funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union, NOOR, as pilot partner of FotoInMotion, is very excited to have tested this new technological tool and a new way of storytelling in order to create global impact.
